Can you travel cheap to Maldives? The answer is YES, YOU CAN. But ... with certain nuances or limitations, obvious. Of course, traveling to the Maldives for free is easier than you think and in this post we will give you a few tips to get to know this paradise in the cheapest way possible.

The Maldives, believe us, are not just expensive resorts. At first glance it may seem that they are not within reach of backpacking budgets, however if certain measures are taken so that the expenses soar, the whim can be affordable.

1. Choose flights

Whether it will be expensive or not depends on where you take the flights. Obviously if you leave from Spain or any European country the flights are not cheap (not to mention America, here our South American friends have it more fucked up). Although there are always punctual offers with flights for about 400-600 euros round trip to Male. In fact, more and more large companies fly to the capital of Maldives, sometimes it is the airport of call to reach Asia. If, like us, you are visiting India or Sri Lanka the flights are cheap. Round trip can leave for 100 or 150 euros. Watch out for offers! Spicejet, Sri Lanka Airlines or Airasia have good prices.

2. Choose the accommodation

If you go to resort date by jxxxdo! Prices are high and catering services, excursions and other extras too. Solution: local islands. We already told you: there are Maldives beyond the resorts. Obviously if you want to sleep in the cabins on the water, which you saw on TV / internet so many times ... you will have to pay a good sum of money, but if you want a double room, with private bathroom and breakfast, it is very easy to get Offers for about € 40-50 / night.

There is even accommodation for about € 30 / night. You just need to look and have some luck. But € 50 is not bad either, huh!

3. Choose the island

We travel 2 times to Maldives. On our first trip we spent an unforgettable week in Danghethi, an island lost in an atoll south of Male. The second time we stepped on Maldives we visited 4 islands: Maafushi, Gulhi, Huraa and Dhiffushi.

Having visited all of them, we are clear that if you have, for example, a week of time, it is best to focus on Maafushi (where there are more hotels, restaurants and especially cheap tours there) and Gulhi (a short distance from the first, with a spectacular beach and a lot of tranquility).

If you have more time we would add a few extra days to visit Dhiffushi (we thought it was the most beautiful, although the tours are somewhat more expensive) or Danghethi (near this island there is another, Digurah, which looks very good).

4. Choose the transports

Check the options to get to the island. Almost all can be reached by local ferry, the truth is that the ferry networks are wide and economical. For example, we pay about € 2.5 for a 1-hour ferry plus another 4-and-a-half hour ferry. If the only solution is to arrive by private boat (speed boat) prepare about $ 20-35 minimum to arrive (depending on the distance), plus many others back! Not to mention the seaplanes ... these are really exclusive! Come on, using local ferries is the best way to travel cheap to Maldives!

5. Choose accommodation with a kitchen

Ideally, if you want to save money in Maldives, you will find accommodation with a kitchen. The prices in the supermarkets (or rather little shops with “dnot all“), Although more expensive than Asia in general, will always be more convenient than eating in restaurants. Some examples of prices (exchange rate 20 rf = € 1):

  • 1 egg: 2 rf;
  • 3in1 coffee envelope: 2 rf;
  • Coca-Cola 2l: 35 rf;
  • Sliced bread: 20 rf;
  • Pack of 10 sausages: 22 rf;
  • Big tuna can: 20 rf;
  • Tomato can: 20 rf;
  • 1/2 kg of pasta: 25 rf;
  • Snacks: 1 rf;
  • 1.5 l water bottle: 8 rf;
  • Onion: 4 rf;
  • Garlic head: 2 rf;
  • Pineapple: 35 rf.

If you do not get pisito with cooking or cooking raisins during your vacation, do not despair ...

6. Choose where to eat

... on each island there are at least a couple of cheap restaurants. Ask at your accommodation! There are a variety of snacks based on fish or sausages that cost about 3 ruffias (€ 0.15). Dishes such as fried noddles or fried rice cost 30 or 60 rf (in cheap restaurants) and 70-100 rf (in more tourist sites). Also take advantage of the fact that you are on the island: fish is usually the cheapest dishes (especially tuna). Come on, that about 50-120 rf per person eats well! (about € 3-7 to change).

Trick to save: each hotel usually includes 1-2 bottles of water per day. You can take them to the restaurants and save the money of the drink, it is something quite common and they will not tell you anything, in addition the natural juices are usually quite expensive and the drinks too (they are small in size).

7. Choose excursions

Going to Maldives without doing the occasional excursion… it's a real shame! If you want to know the marine world, live the experience of stepping on a sandbank, swimming with whale sharks, blankets, turtles, spending a day at a resort ... everything is possible 🙂

Of course, if you want to save a good money, it is best to make excursions / tours from Maafushi. It is where there is more demand and supply, so prices are more competitive. Example: half a day with two snorkeling and sand bank stops cost $ 25 in Maafushi, while in Dhiffushi, for the same price you only have one snorkeling stop or the sand bank.

More prices: $ 100 excursion to see and swim with the whale shark, $ 100-150 day at the resort (with meals and drinks included), $ 20 snorkeling + sand bank and Gulhi, etc ...
