Day 2: MELK - MAUTHAUSEN CONCENTRATION FIELD - SALZBURBO

  Thursday, June 24, 2010

7 in the morning, the alarm sounds. We have to get going, that today we have a full day of visits. Among them the Mauthausen and Salzburg concentration camp.
Shower and breakfast at the Hotel Wachauerhof with little variety, but abundant, so we can't complain too much.
About 8.30 in the morning we take the rental car in Austria and go to the parking of the Abbey of Melk.

We arrived before 9, so we have time to see the surroundings with ease.
The visit to Melk Abbey takes about 2 hours and after seeing that we have a couple of groups ahead, we advance them and get to see the Library and the Cathedral alone.

The Melk Abbey Library is impressive, we stay there, with our mouths open, trying to keep every detail in our memory.

Melk Abbey Library

Melk Abbey Cathedral, you need to define it the same word as the Library: impressive.

We enjoy these rooms and the views offered by Melk Abbey from their balconies, practically alone. It is a luxury.

Melk Abbey Library

After this visit, we are going to see the gardens, but seeing that time starts to fall on us, we do not go through them and we are satisfied with seeing only part.
About 11 in the morning we take the car to go to the Mauthausen concentration camp. It takes 1 hour and little to arrive and from the parking lot, we get an idea of what we are going to see and above all what that means.
We walk the whole area little by little, almost without speaking, since every time we see another barracks, our soul shrinks a little more.

Mauthausen concentration camp

We have bought a small guide of the Mauthausen concentration camp, which in the end I stopped reading, because I had enough with what I was seeing.

Mauthausen concentration camp

The end I let Roger go only until Stairs of Death and the quarry and I have decided to wait for him in the gardens of the memorial sculptures.
The truth is that the visit is worth it, but I also have to say, that seeing it live leaves a "bitter" taste in the mouth, of those that cost work to forget.
After this visit, we have to set course for Salzburg, where we arrived from Mauthausen in 1 hour and a half, stopping at a highway restaurant to eat.
We arrive at our hotel in Salzburg, the Best Western Hotel Stieglbräu at about 4.30 in the afternoon and decide that we will not rest and go directly to visit what we can of the city.
A good option to learn more about the history of this beautiful city is to book a guided tour in Spanish or this free tour of Salzburg for free!
So by tomorrow we will have that in advance and we will have more time for the next visits we have scheduled. Since yesterday when we arrived in Austria we have the pace taken, so we are at full capacity.
If you are going to visit most of the city's points of interest it may be interesting to book the Salzburg Card that includes public transport and the entrance to all Salzburg attractions, including the funicular of the fortress, the panoramic boat and the Untersberg cable car .

We start passing in front of the Mirabell Gardens (We will leave this visit for tomorrow morning, before leaving for Wattens).
We continue until we reach Salzburg Markarplatz and we see that there is a lot of atmosphere, they are playing and singing, on stage in the streets and it almost does not fit in the area.
Directly we cross the bridge and we go in search of the famous Getreidegasse street. We can not stop looking up, to see each poster of each store. So we continue for a while, until we reach the Mozart's Birthplace.
A good option is to book the Mozart tour with a Spanish guide that runs through the historic center of Salzburg following the steps of this music genius.

Salzburg

We see that we are on time, before they close and we go directly to visit it. We had a good time inside, seeing curiosities of Mozart's life.
After almost 1 hour of visit, we leave and go directly to a terrace to have a drink and rest for a while.
There we see the atmosphere of the street and let our feet rest a little, before starting again, to travel the rest of the street we have left.
We arrive at the Salzburg Cathedral and enter to visit it. It is spectacular, it is worth the visit if you have time.

Then, almost unwittingly, we meet the St. Peter's Church and its cemetery.
We walk slowly, since it is really worth spending a few minutes to visit.
We leave the catacombs, since we see that we are very close to the funicular, which goes up to the fortress and we want to see the schedules.
We arrive at the entrance and see that you can climb and visit, although the fortress (inside) cannot be visited.

Salzburg

Although you can surround yourself and be in all the "viewpoints", which is really what we want.
We are in the enclosure for about 2 hours, turning it around and stopping on many occasions to take pictures.

Salzburg

After this, our body asks us for a break and we decide that it is time to take the funicular, get off and look for a place to have dinner.
But no, when we got off, we decided to do the part of the tour that we have in the guide and that we had not done yet.

Salzburg

If you do not have a car, a good option from Vienna to visit Salzburg is with a bus tour with a guide in Spanish.
We keep wandering around the Alstatd area, until we see an Italian restaurant and we can't let it go.
We dined very well and at a good price and directly decided that we go to the hotel to rest.
We go back to "undo" all the way and when we cross the bridge, we see that what used to look like a lot of people listening to music in the street, now is a crowd, that we are going through problems.
If it were not because our bodies tell us "no, no, no", it would be a fantastic occasion, to be able to enjoy the night of Salzburg.
We arrived at the hotel, wanting to lie down and rest and above all, wanting to arrive tomorrow and continue with our trip to Austria.
